PRESS RELEASE Giscard d’Estaing paid tribute to the European Movement for its active participation in upholding European Unity At the reception which the European Movement organized in honour of the members of the Convention at the Palais d'Egmont last Thursday, President Giscard d’Estaing expressed his gratitude to the Members of the European Movement to be so actively engaged in the debate on the future of Europe - through its own special working groups - as well as in the spread of the European spirit for more than half a century. He is looking forward for its comments on the text that the Convention will submit in a few months. The European Movement has launched a wide debate in the member and applicant countries of the European Union. It will end with a conference in Athens at the beginning of 2003, reporting on the results of the debate in all participating countries. The reception was the opportunity for the Members of the Convention, nearly half of whom are also members of the European Moment, to discuss the first phase of the Convention work. It consisted in listening to European citizens and NGOs. Everyone agreed on the importance to deeply involve European citizens. Giscard d'Estaing, who is honorary President of the European Movement, insisted on the close cooperation with European Institutions and on concentrating on the content of the final text. The reception, which was opened by speeches from the President of the European Movement and former President of the European Parliament, José Maria Gil-Robles, Valéry Giscard d’Estaing and Guido Podesta in the name of the President of the European Parliament - Pat Cox, has been attended by 200 distinguished guests, among whom were Romano Prodi (President of the EU-Commission), Mario Monti (EU-Commissioner), Guido Podesta (Vice-President of the European Parliament), Jean-Luc Dehaene (Vice-President of the European Convention), Giuliano Amato (Vice-President of the European Convention), Mesut Yilmaz (Vice-Prime Minister of Turkey), Fran?ois-Xavier de Donnea (Minister-President of the Brussels-Capital Region's Government) and many Members of the European Convention as well as several ambassadors and high-ranking EU-officials. The Movement was created in 1948 after The Hague Congress, which launched an appeal for a political economic and monetary union. In the Congress participated among others: Konrad Adenauer, Winston Churchill, Harold Macmillan, Fran?ois Mitterand, Paul-Henri Spaak and Altiero Spinelli Today the Movement counts members in 33 countries in Europe with increasing demands from countries in Eastern Europe.
